After graduating from university with a degree in bacteriology and genetics, I worked for 4.5 years as a biomedical scientist in the clinical microbiology labs at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester, UK. During this time, I became a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists. I then moved to Leicester University where I studied part-time for a PhD in bacterial molecular genetics. My PhD concerned regulation of the bacterial cell cycle, examining the hypothesis that fluxes in calcium ion concentration are responsible for triggering cell cycle events like in eukaryotes. More specifically, my project looked for the presence of Voltage Operated Calcium Channels in the membrane, using inhibitors of eukaryotic channels to isolate drug-resistant temperature-sensitive mutants. Through this project, I became fascinated by a family of proteins called the nucleoid-associated proteins whose role is to organise and regulate the nucleoid topology. Proteins such as H-NS and Fis are global regulators, playing key roles in regulating genes that are responsive to environmental and physiological signals. I spent several years as a post-doctoral research scientist, studying how these proteins regulate bacterial gene expression. During this period, I learned how to perform microarray to study whole-cell transcriptomics in Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and used it to study how H-NS regulates gene expression in response to temperature. Microarray was also used to compare stress responses of lab-strains of E. coli and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) to understand why EHEC is better able to withstand the stresses encountered during food production and manufacture. I then moved into a teaching role at the University of Birmingham, teaching post- and undergraduate students about food microbiology and food safety. After 4 years of food microbiology, I moved to Nottingham Trent University where I taught all aspects of microbiology to under- and post-graduate students before finally moving to Birmingham City University where I currently work as a lecturer in clinical microbiology.Dr. Yasin Özdemir has been researcher from 2007 to present in the Department of Food Technologies, Ataturk Central Horticultural Research Institute Yalova/Turkey. Short antibacterial peptides and peptidomimetics as antimicrobial potential drugs. Recently drug like compound were prepared and showed remarkable biological activity as bactericides for Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria (Staph. Aurous and E. coli respectively) in a sub micro molar concentrations. The research is typical for Drug Discovery were the synthesis as well as the biological tests are carried out by the collaborators in the group. 2) Peptide Nucleic Acids is a front line research topic in the field of gene therapeutics. Since the deciphering of the human genome, gene surrogates are needed both for diagnostics as well as therapeutic compounds. The technology for the synthesis of short gene surrogate was developed and the interactions of theses with DNA as well as RNA were established. All work is done within the group. 3) Magnetic nano-particles are in the center of an effort of introduction into cancer cells. The technology is based on coating the inorganic particles with a polymer and attaching to this by means of tether to a cancer cell destroyer a known natural product - to kill the cancer tumor. This novel technology for the drug delivery is presently developed in our laboratory.Biofuel production, Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Antimicrobial activity, Food Microbiology, Biodegradation, Bioremediation, Aquaculture, Environmental Science, Sustainability, and Safety.Bioinformatics, Immunology and molecular biology.Infectious Diseases, Pulmonology, Immunology, Viral infections.Microbiology, Immunology, Apitherapy.Application of Statistics and Probability, Linear Programming and Optimization, Financial Math, Teaching with Technology, publish papers and books.Viral vaccines, Expressions of viral receptors, Page therapy, Autoimmune diseases, Cancer Immunity, Invertebrate Immunity.Veterinary Public Health, Food microbiology, Epidemiology of zoonoses, Diagnosis of fungal infections, Dermatology, Ecology of mycotic pathogens, Food hygiene, Occupational zoonoses, Environmental health. His research interest includes Shape memory alloy materials, Biomaterials Bulk and coating, Manufacturing, Testing and Characterization, Surface Engineering, Dip-coatings, Hard Facing for Tribological and Biomedical Applications.Microbiology, Virology, Phage Therapy Medical Education, Immunohematology and Cytopathology.Insect Relations, Microbial Control, Integrated Ecosystems, Insects Biodiversity, Parasitoids and Predators, Insect Control (Biological Control) and Biological Control of Freshwater Snails.Microbiology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Immunology, Plant Extraction, Phytochemistry, Public Health Early detection & Diagnosis of infectious diseases, Infectious control, understanding pathology of infectious agents, Drug resistant mechanisms of MDR bacteria, antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of medicinal plants.
