Dr. Twalib Olega Aliku is a consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at the Uganda Heart Institute with eight years experience in the care of children with acquired and congenital heart disease. Twalib Olega is currently one of only two experts in the country providing transcatheter interventions (closed heart procedures) for the treatment of children with congenital heart disease. Twalib Olega has been part of the research team that has demonstrated that trained nurses and other lower level health workers can competently perform and interpret echocardiograms (heart scans) using hand held devices for the diagnosis of Rheumatic Heart Disease, the commonest acquired heart disease in children and young adults in developing countries. This is especially important in a country where trained cardiovascular health experts are few. Twalib Olega head the implementation of a pilot telemedicine project that supports cardiovascular care in Gulu regional referral hospital. This project seeks to leverage hand held echocardiography, task shifting of performance of echocardiograms to nurses and low band width internet connectivity to provide a potentially sustainable and scalable solution to the lack of access to high quality heart care services at most regional referral hospitals in the country. Twalib Olega actively involved in local church fellowship at Kololo Deliverance Church along Sadler Way in Naguru where recently (November 2018) I was selected to serve on the eldership board of the church.
