Abstract

Background: Blood pressure is a major public health problem that contributes significantly to cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity. Worldwide, hypertension affects an estimated 1 billion people, with 65 million adults in the United States. Clinical and statistical research imply that emerging risk factors for hypertension, such as khat chewing, may exist in addition to traditional risk factors like dyslipidemia, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and impaired glucose tolerance.
